CDS Selection Process – Complete UPSC Exam Stages
The CDS selection process conducted by UPSC includes Written Examination, SSB Interview, Medical Examination and Final Merit List. Candidates must clear each stage to join IMA, INA, AFA or OTA.
Overview of CDS Selection Process
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination selection process evaluates candidates academically, psychologically, physically and medically. The three major stages include Written Examination, Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview, and Medical Examination. Final selection is based on merit and available vacancies.
Stage 1: Written Examination
IMA / INA / AFA
- English – 100 Marks
- General Knowledge – 100 Marks
- Mathematics – 100 Marks
- Total – 300 Marks
OTA
- English – 100 Marks
- General Knowledge – 100 Marks
- Total – 200 Marks
Candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks in each paper and overall to be shortlisted for the SSB interview.
Stage 2: SSB Interview (5-Day Process)
Day 1 – Screening
- OIR Test
- PPDT
Day 2 – Psychology
- TAT
- WAT
- SRT
- Self Description
Day 3 & 4 – GTO
- Group Discussion
- Planning Exercise
- Command Task
- Individual Obstacles
Day 5 – Conference
Final evaluation by the board reviewing performance across all tests before recommendation.
Stage 3: Medical Examination
- Height and weight standards
- Vision and hearing tests
- General physical fitness
- No disqualifying medical conditions
Air Force candidates have comparatively stricter medical and visual standards.
Final Merit List
Final merit is prepared based on combined marks of Written Examination and SSB Interview. Medical fitness and available vacancies determine final allocation.
